October’s Moose Class

Guest Teacher: Laura Vanhulle
Laura originates from Belgium. After training at Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Laura worked extensively with internationally known companies: Shobana Jeyasingh, ACE dance & music, Coda Dance, Motionhouse (‘The Voyage’), Room 2 Manoeuvre, Southpaw Dance Company, Aakash Odedra (as Rehearsal Director), Gary Clarke, Autin DT (as collaborator), Katye Coe (who was mentor and dramaturg). Since founding VDT in 2013, she has trained with DV8 in Berlin, in flying low techniques with Vangelis Legakis in Hong Kong and was awarded BDN’s inaugural ChoreoMatch.
As Artistic Director, her choreographic outputs include: ‘Angles in Life’, a full length piece for theatre and a short film which has been seen nationally and internationally. ‘Infinite Womanhood’, a solo work performed at the International Choreography Platform in Shanghai and Birmingham International Dance Festival. ‘Echo’ a dance work seen nationally and internationally and ‘Half Light’, a commission by Room Art in collaboration with Melissa Morris and EIF. She has appeared in videos and on TV. Laura continues to develop her own creative practice and mentors emerging artists. Laura has been commissioned to create a new work in Belgium in 2020.
Laura’s class will use the Chakra points as an initiation to generate movement and energy. Centering around the connection between the head and the spine, creating flow in a serpent like fashion. With the incorporation of Laura’s handstand practice, handstand conditioning to support the external rotators will be integrated into floor work techniques. The use of opposites are prominent in her highly physical practice, gathering – sending, high – low, emotionally driven movement – functional movement patterns.
