In September 2021 we commenced on a two year research project, funded by Paul Hamlyn Foundation, entitled from HEAD to TOE and everything inbetween. We are collaborating with 6 Primary Schools across Lancashire to explore the role of the creative moving body and dance in learning and retaining knowledge within literacy and maths at Key Stage 2.

The project is an exciting new avenue for Blue Moose Dance; taking the wealth of knowledge and experience we have of delviering dance in schools and exploring how this works in a new context and format, in a classroom setting, within a curriculum framework and for teachers to explore and embed in their own practice.

Sarah Hall and Sarah Gough are the Lead Artists in the project, working with teachers and support staff from St Josephs Primary School, Pilling St John’s Primary School, Chaucer Community Primary School, Stalmine Primary School and Nateby Primary School.

Sarah worked as the Project Manager on the South Yorkshire Youth Dance Company project from June 2021 – August 2022, supported by South Yorkshire Dance Hub and Yorkshire Dance, with funding from Arts Council England.

Sarah brought her wealth of experience in delivering, managing and developing youth dance provision in community settings over the past 12 years to help establish a youth dance hub, made up of four satellite companies in Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield. The project aimed to grow the provision available for young people from a range of experience levels and dance styles, establishing a thriving community for creative practice and potential progression for those who are interested in training and pursuing careers in the dance sector in the future.

From 2018 – 2020, we worked on the fantastic Rural Steps project with Sarah as Project manager and Zanna working as a Dance Artist through her work with Ingleton Youth Dance.

Rural Steps began in 2018 through funding from Arts Council England and ongoing support from the York and North Yorkshire Dance Network, Yorkshire Dance, Craven District Council, Create Scarborough, York St John University, York Theatre Royal, Rural Arts, York Dance Space and Gecko Physical Theatre.

The project supported the development of six Youth Dance programmes in areas across North Yorkshire: Skipton, Ingleton, Northallerton, Thirsk, Harrogate and Scarborough. The programmes were led by six Independent Dance Artists who live and work across North Yorkshire, supporting them to establish new activity and sustainable work in their locale. You can find out more about continuing activity in some of these areas by checking out Union of Dance, Thirsk Youth Dance, Skipton Youth Dance and Step into Boys Project and our very own Ingleton Youth Dance.

For most areas, Artists formed teaching pairs to begin with to support each other in the initial stages and gain a valuable training experience in co-planning and co-delivery of Youth Dance activity. Alongside the programme, Artists attended regular CPD opportunities to strengthen their skills and gain new ideas for delivering dance to those new to dancers and in for young people in rural areas.

As part of this project, we have produced the Making It Happen toolkit, providing information, inspiration and resources for Artists setting up and working in Youth Dance and other Community Dance activities. A great resource if you are starting out and need to get everything in place to hit the ground running. Alongside the toolkit, we also produced a new Podcast series chatting to Youth Dane Artists, Parents and Young Dancers about their experiences in the world of Youth Dance. Check it out!

In 2018 we gained funding from the #iwill fund through Community Foundation for Lancashire and Two Ridings Community Foundation to develop the Dance Changemakers project in which young people from Lancashire and North Yorkshire participated in dance activity in their local area, took part in leadership and development training and led consultation sessions within their local community. Through consultation sessions the young people were able to identify key factors affecting young people in their community and the benefits of creative and artistic practice.

The young people took part in a mapping exercise to outline existing arts provision in their area and developed new project ideas in line with the needs of young people in their local community. Their project planning for new projects included geographical scoping, identifying potential participants, and outlining project timelines. This project also gave the young people shadowing opportunities to work with Professional Artists to experience artistic careers and learn more about creative practice as a tool to support young people’s development.

Gaining funding from two districts enabled young people to work with their peers from other areas across the wider region, especially from contrasting rural and urban settings, to share and experience dance activities and social engagement in differing areas.

Working through devising, research and development and the production of an education workshop package was an incredible learning curve for the dancers and also allowed them to take their advocacy and leadership skills to the next level. In 2017/18, we received additional funding through the Lancashire Community Investment Fund for a second tour around schools and local organisations, reaching almost 1000 young people in total.

As we look ahead to this year and the huge increase in time online for young people, we see this dance and wellbeing performance package as a great opportunity to support young people to take stock, reflect on their own attitudes towards self care and body image and look to make positive changes.

This performance and workshop package is available for booking this year. The workshop includes repertoire from the performance piece, creative tasks based on exploring your own thoughts on Body Image and the Media, and a discussion on how the work was made.

If you are interested in learning more, please contact our Education Programme Co-Ordinator, Hannah, at education@bluemoosedance.org.uk or 07775 763522.

As the pressures and influence of social media increase, and time online is more prevalent than ever, now is the perfect time to support young people in developing healthy attitudes to their body image, health and wellbeing. Our Body Image Dance Performance schools tour looked to explore just that, and is available for booking again this year.

In 2016, we were successful in gaining funding for Preston Youth Dance Company from the Comic Relief Local Communities Fund to create and tour a new performance piece based on positive body image and healthy attitudes, alongside a workshop delivered by the Company dancers to other young people. During the devising process, dancers researched the issues of negative Body Image through social media for people of their age, explored their individuality and celebrated difference, mocking the ideas of body shapes and unrealistic selfies!

Throughout 2016 and 2017, Blue Moose worked with INTACT community centre in Preston on an Arts Council England funded programme, developing a bespoke dance programme supporting local community members to move, be creative and connect with each other. After initial consultation with service users, we established a programme including Adult Dance Fitness classes, Chair-based exercise and Creative Street Dance classes for young people which ran for 12 months. Alongside this, we designed and delivered an Arts Award summer project empowering young people to take ownership of their local spaces, raise issues close to them and produce a Dance Film celebrating their voices, resulting in several young people gaining and Explore or Bronze level Arts Award.

Using music inspired by the seaside alongside other lively numbers, we created a travelling dance performance to showcase alongside the other 7000 participants in the parade and as an opportunity to raise the profile of the wonderful delights of Blackpool! A regular tradition since 1215, the parade is watched live by 500,000 people and broadcast on the BBC to over 2 million viewers. As part of Team Blackpool entry into the parade, we had a specially designed float was made by the Blackpool Illuminations Team float and the fabulous Lawrence LLewelyn Bowen joined us for the day, waving to the crowds and playing our on-float Wurlitzer!
